‘Freedom’, a short film filmed in Calais just before the demolition of the camp, provides a glimpse of the limbo, humiliation and vulnerability that those seeking refuge face, as well as their profound dignity, strength and courage. Featuring the reflections of Semhar, Zehra, Haithem, Mohammed and Hamdan, those interviewed speak about their journeys from Eritrea and Sudan, of torture endured in Libya and experiences of crossing the Mediterranean. With the lack of a safe or legal means of passage, thousands of women, men and children continue to die preventable deaths at sea and face ongoing precarity if they survive the journey to Europe. As archive of and testimony to the community and endurance created by necessity in ‘The Jungle’, those seeking refuge speak of personal and collective searches for freedom.
